Patient Stories: Gwendolyn Becker

Gwendolyn Becker leads and active lifestyle. She’s an outside sales representative by trade and visits the gym for rigorous workout daily, but something was holding her back, “I was in a tremendous amount of pain all the time and it was really slowing me down,” Gwen said. After visiting Dr. Ian Cohen at Associated Women’s Health Specialists in Waterbury, Conn. she learned she had three fibroid tumors and that a hysterectomy was her only option to alleviate the pain. “Clearly a hysterectomy isn’t something that a woman wants to go through, but I really had no choice.” Dr. Cohen explained that Gwendolyn’s hysterectomy could be performed using Robotic Assisted Surgery at Saint Mary’s Hospital. More invasive surgical techniques were also available to Gwendolyn, but after researching other options, she decided robotic assisted surgery was best for her, “The benefits of robotic assisted surgery really appealed to me,” Gwen said, “My main concerns with having the hysterectomy were scarring, pain post surgery and recovery time. Robotic assisted surgery was the procedure that was going to fit what I needed. ”

After the surgery, Gewndolyn spent about 24 hours at Saint Mary’s Hospital recovering. “Saint Mary’s was wonderful,” Gwen said, “All of the nurses and hospital staff were tremendous, and Dr. Cohen did a great job.” She left the hospital within 24 hours with only mild discomfort. She was able to return to work after two weeks and has minimal scarring. “I just feel so much better overall,” Gwen said, “I no longer have the pain and discomfort I was feeling prior to the surgery and I am so glad that I did it. I would definitely recommend robotic assisted surgery at Saint Mary’s to any woman who has to undergo a hysterectomy. My experience from start to finish was phenomenal.”
